Neon - dancing with the gods, a tribute to voivod

There are simply some things that should not be done. I too have thought about covering a Voivod song or two and luckily realized what a bad idea it was. The best you could hope for is a pale imitation. So I admit I was biased going in but I tried to be open-minded. I was just thinking about how many "tribute" albums had TERRIBLE bands attempting do to something new/creative with some of their heroes work. I believe this album fits nicely in that catagory. First it sounds like it was recorded on a 4 track, with the drums buried and the guitar way too loud. Next they insult Away with an awful sounding and badly programmed drum machine. They could have at least tried to make sure the changes were tight, but for the most part this is a sloppy recording with sloppy playing. Then the vocals ... they are simply terrible. The worst song is Mercury (which is off of my 2nd fave album Phobos), which barely resembles the original. I suppose in some cases this could be a good thing but it sounds like a really bad Ramones song. The only good thing I can say is the songs are representitave of most of voivod's career. This band needs 1. a new singer 2. a drummer 3. to practice (alot!) before they attempt anything again. And please no more covers! I would reccommend you stay far far away from this album. In fact, I'm trying to pretend it doesn't exist.
